Spread over 3000 square kilometers of the Great Thar Desert, near the medieval city of Jaisalmer, the Desert National Park comprises undulating sand dunes, fixed dunes and compact salt-lake bottoms. While the sparse desert shrubs provide food and shelter to the fauna, it is a harsh land nonetheless even for the most hardy.
Vast expanses of flat land, seem to stretch into infinity, with a never-ending horizon. Beside the graceful black buck and sleek chinkara, predators like the desert wolf, desert fox and desert cat abound here. The area, however, supports one of the most endangered birds-the great Indian bustard, which walks around with confidence and grace totally oblivious of its fate.
